The era of exploration dates to 15th century however It’s evident that Arabians traded spices and Ivory much before this from our forefathers, because Ceylon was famous for its plethora of spices and herbs.
Tropical Ceylon with its perfect climatic blend and geographical location, produces some of the finest spices such as cinnamon, cloves, pepper, nutmeg, mace, cardamom and so on. In 1505 Portuguese Admiral Lorenzo De Almeida accidentally landed on the South Coast of Ceylon, whence the source of true cinnamon was discovered. Thereafter the Dutch and the British vied for world trade superiority and took control of Ceylon, primarily to gain a monopoly of cinnamon supply to the west.
